Vera Wang Wedding Dress Collection. From Google Images. The color and style of one’s wedding dress can be influenced by tradition, religion and culture – or personal preference. In Western cultures today, brides often choose a white wedding dress, though “wedding white” now also includes shades like champagne, eggshell, ecru and ivory.

The tradition of wearing a white wedding dress was made popular by Queen Victoria in the 19th century. Though many people assume the color white symbolizes purity and childhood innocence, history indicates this is not intent originally. In fact, historically it was the color blue that was connected to purity and faithfulness. A white wedding dress actually reflected the social status of a woman who could afford to be married in a white dress that she would only wear once for her wedding festivities.

Until the mid-1800s, most brides wore the best dress already in their wardrobe.  After “wedding white” was made popular by Queen Victoria, brides in Western cultures have primarily stuck to this tradition – even when a little creativity had to be employed to make it happen.  In the depression area, if the luxury of purchasing a white dress was even an option – it was usually then dyed a darker color to be worn for everyday purposes.  During WWII borrowing or renting a white dress was a popular option.

Princess Diana’s choice of an ivory wedding dress (one of the most recognized gowns in the world) broke tradition. Women began to consider other factors in choosing their own wedding dress colors. More recently in America culture, many brides are opting for expressing their individuality with style and color that are representative of their personality and complementary to their appearance.

The modern bride can wear the classic white of the traditional wedding experience, or she can pick a gown color based on other factors:

  • The colors flatter them the most. Many brides want to look their best in colors that complement their complexion, hair and eyes.
  • A solid colored gown (or a white dress with color accents) can help the bride coordinated the overall color scheme of her wedding.
  • Location may play a part in color choice for a wedding gown. Themed or destination weddings can be the perfect place for bright, fun colors and patterns.

Many bridal collections, including that of popular designer Vera Wang include fun color choices for the perfect dress for a bride’s special day.
